"Artism: The Art of Autism" Book Review

This is autism awareness month and the autism community is having a celebration of diverse strengths. There is great beauty, strength and oddly enough ‘solidarity’ in diversity. It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I believe it might truer be said that “perception” of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is everywhere at all times; whether or not certain eyes can perceive that beauty is in fact the question.
The fifty four artists who are featured in the newly released book, Artism: The Art of Autism, offer “snapshots of clarity” into worlds that contain inner self consistency…albeit from unique planes of self consistency.
This is a book of communication. It shares the artists’ communication of concepts, perspective, feelings and emotions going beyond day to day routine exchanges and dives head long into a complex and eloquent language that we call ‘art’. Through color, shape and form we have a glimpse into the worlds of various individuals on the autism spectrum and have the opportunity to share…if only for a brief moment….their worlds of incredible insight and expression.
Artism: The Art of Autism authored by, Debbie Hosseini, is published by Autism Today, prefaced by Keri Bowers, intro given by Karen Simmons and is a compilation of art pieces that are appealing, engaging and just happen to be by artists on the spectrum. Also included in the work are essays by some of the most honored members of the autism community such as behavioral therapist Colin Zimbleman, Darol A. Treffert, M.D. who is the author of several publications including the recent book Islands of Genius: The Bountiful Mind of the Autistic, Acquired, and Savant, and Dr. Stephen Shore autism advocate, lecturer, professor, author, partner in “Where in the World is Dr. Stephen Shore?” and an individual on the autism spectrum.
Be sure to obtain a copy of this monumental effort which showcases not only the talent of people on the spectrum but the efforts of so many professionals who have come together to create a coherent statement regarding the abilities and strengths of all members of society.
