Yogurt making: One easy step toward better health
Taking control of our health has become a primary focus for all of us. Ignoring the responsibility we have for our own health has lead to the predicament we as a nation find ourselves in today. The first step in balancing our lives and balancing our health is to understand what we put into our bodies. It becomes necessary to observe the immediate and accumulative effects our choices produce. To understand exactly what is entering our systems it proves prudent to have a hand in any and all preparation of food that we consume. Translation, we need to prepare as much of our own food as possible and pay attention to the results.
One of the easiest and most underutilized kitchen routines is making fresh, organic, whole milk, yogurt. Take it a step further by make it with raw milk and the health benefits are compounded with interest. For more information regarding raw milk usage please see http://www.realmilk.com/ a project of The Weston A. Price foundation.
While looking through one of my newest ‘favorite blogs’, Feed Me Like You Mean It, I saw the following step by step video of the yogurt making process. With no ‘fuss or muss’, www.feedmlikeyoumeanit.com shows how simple it is to have your own delicious yogurt on hand any time at all. It is delicious plain, with fresh fruit, with a bit of honey (or stevia) and can be enjoyed in that manner as a meal or snack. Our household prefers it plain with a bit of either mint, cucumber, or tumeric. The tumeric provides curcumen which has incredible health benefits (lending itself to a more in depth exploration at a later date).
Strained yogurt is another way to enjoy this wonderfully healthy food. Yogurt provides the proper proportions of protein to fat and is loaded with absorbable calcium. If lactose is not a consideration for you or your family, (e.g.-following a GFCF diet) yogurt and strained ‘yogurt cheese’ can become a staple. The strained yogurt cheese, if left to strain to a firm consistency, can take the place of cream cheese in many recipes and combined with herbs, spices, onions or garlic can become a savory spread or dip.
Our household practice is to make a gallon per week and it is amazing how many healthful uses it has other than just eating. Yogurt can be used on the face in different types of natural moisturizing treatments, has been effective for acne treatment for some, can be applied around the eyes (mixed with shredded cucumber) for puffy eyes…the list of natural external uses goes on and on.
You are encouraged to try this simple yogurt making process, have fresh yogurt on hand, Google its uses and prepare to be amazed at its many healthful benefits.
Thanks goes to Alex Lewin, author of the incredibly cool blog, www.feedmelikeyoumeanit.com, for sharing this instructional video made with how2heroes.
